Easter is a very popular celebration in southern Italy, and the Cilento region is no exception. Its religious and culinary customs and traditions are some of the things that make it one of the most anticipated periods of the year for both tourists and locals. If you’re planning to spend your next vacation in southern Italy, the Easter period is definitely a fantastic time to discover the stunning Cilento region – especially thanks to the sea of colourful spring blossoms! From a religious point of view, there are various events that are much loved by locals. Each town or village in the Cilento region has its own special customs and traditions associated with Easter week. The Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) in the Velia archaeological area, the Passion of Christ at the Sanctuary of Gethsemane in Paestum, or the Easter concert in Lentiscosa are some of the most noteworthy. On the Thursday before Easter, it’s customary to prepare the so-called “sepolcro di grano”, a decoration made of young grain that symbolises the death and resurrection of Jesus. On Good Friday, instruments made of wood, known as “taroccole”, are played instead of church bells as a sign of mourning for the death of Jesus.
