We proudly present …

… the delicious pastiera tart!

Have you heard of it? The “pastiera” is a world-famous sweet treat from Italy’s Campania region. Would you like to find out more about it?

The pastiera is a hugely popular Easter tart in the Campania region. It’s traditionally prepared on the Thursday of Easter week and baked in a wood-fired oven. The name “pastiera” is sometimes said to have come from the fact that one of its main ingredients is sweet pasta. Have you ever wondered about the history behind this Easter treat? The richness of the ingredients and complexity of its preparation might make you think it originated in royal kitchens. In reality, however, the recipe for the pastiera as we know it today was created in the 16th century within the walls of a convent on San Gregorio Armeno, Naple’s famous “nativity street”. One of the Benedictine nuns wanted to create a cake that incorporated all of the ingredients most symbolic of the Easter period, in particular eggs. As most Italians will tell you, the ingredients include ricotta cheese, orange blossoms, and candied fruits. When Easter Sunday comes around, you’ll find the unmistakeable, inimitable pastiera tart on most tables in the Cilento region, including at our hotels in Palinuro.
